How long the electric car can go on one charge?

This depends on the size of the battery and of course on the size and weight of the car, which needs to be moved. Modern electric cars can go up to 200 or in some instances even 500 km with one charge.

What happens, when the car doesn’t have a battery anymore and there’s no station, where you could charge your car?

The car needs to be recharged before it can be used again. There are cars, which have an additional engine on board, called a range extender, which can be powered by petrol in case of the battery being exhausted. Other ideas involve mobile generators, which can be used by automobile clubs, for example, to help people with empty batteries on the road.

Why is it good for the environment? I’ve heard so.

The use of electric cars itself is good for the environment because there are no fossil fuels being burned and, therefore, no greenhouse gases being emitted. However, the electricity used has to be generated beforehand. If this happens in power plants, which use fossil fuels to generate energy, the outcome stays the same. Only it is not the car itself that emits the greenhouse gases, but the power plant.

Is that a future trend? Are electric cars going to be getting more and more popular?

The use of electric cars is a goal for the future society. In Germany, for example, it is planned to have 1 million electric powered cars on the streets by 2020. Other countries have similarly ambitious goals.

And, how does it look in different countries? Are the electric cars getting more popular there, as well?

Some countries are much further in the use of electric cars than, for example, Germany. Electric cars are much more widely used in Scandinavian countries and the Netherlands. Norway stands out in particular. More than 20% of the cars newly registered here are electric powered.

Are these cars expensive?

Electric cars used to be more expensive. With the further development of batteries they could be made more affordable. Nowadays, electric cars have similar prices to conventionally powered cars.

Is it expensive the maintenance of such a car?

The electricity used is actually cheaper than the petrol used for covering the same distance. Additionally, many people already produce their own energy with photovoltaic systems. This electric energy can be used for powering the car, which makes it even cheaper.

How’s the law changing within this matter?

There are efforts in Germany and the EU to make the use of electric cars more attractive. For instance, already now you do not have to pay any vehicle tax for electric cars. Additionally, exemptions from parking prohibitions or the use of bus lanes are being considered.

Does that mean, that soon all of us need to change to this type of a car?

I don’t think that conventionally powered cars will disappear in the near future.

Are a lot of companies offering this type of a car, already?

Most of the big car manufacturers have an electric car in their portfolio. Some of them use their old product line and just exchange the engine; others develop whole new lines of cars. Then there are even newly established car manufacturers, which focus only on the production and development of electric cars.
